Choosing a KYC API provider is one of the highest-leverage decisions an NBFC makes. It sets your onboarding conversion, your fraud exposure, and whether you can satisfy an RBI inspection without scrambling. The market is crowded, and most comparison content is thinly disguised advertising. This guide focuses on the capabilities that actually matter, the compliance bar you have to clear, and how to evaluate providers on your own terms.
What a KYC API actually does
A KYC API replaces manual paperwork with programmatic identity verification. At minimum it verifies government identifiers (PAN, Aadhaar) against source databases and returns a structured, auditable result. Fuller platforms add Video KYC (V-CIP), document OCR, bank-account verification, AML and watchlist screening, and CKYC lookups — so a single integration covers onboarding end to end rather than stitching together five vendors.
The RBI compliance bar you have to clear
For a regulated entity, features are secondary to compliance. The RBI's Master Direction on KYC (2016, as amended) governs how you may onboard. Aadhaar OTP-based eKYC is fast but subject to account limits; full-KYC relationships need Video KYC (V-CIP), which the RBI treats as equivalent to in-person verification — provided it is run by a trained official, includes a liveness check, geotags the customer within India, and is captured as an encrypted, time-stamped recording behind a concurrent audit. Any provider you shortlist must support these controls and produce the audit trail an examiner will ask for.
Capabilities to evaluate
Beyond compliance, weigh: coverage (PAN, Aadhaar, bank account, GST, voter ID, DL, and business KYC in one place); accuracy and fuzzy name-matching (exact string matching is too brittle for Indian names); Video KYC that completes in a couple of minutes; CKYC integration to avoid re-collecting documents; AML/PEP screening with ongoing monitoring; fraud signals (tamper detection, liveness, device intelligence); reliability (high uptime with a source-failover strategy); and clean RESTful APIs with real documentation. Ask every provider for their uptime record and their fallback behaviour when a government source is down.
The providers worth knowing
Several established platforms serve Indian BFSI, including FinHub, Signzy, IDfy, HyperVerge, AuthBridge, Surepass and Perfios (which acquired Karza). They differ in coverage breadth, Video KYC maturity, pricing model and how NBFC-specific their workflows are. Rather than trust a ranking, run a proof-of-concept on your own document mix and volumes — the right choice depends on your customer base and channels.
Where FinHub fits
FinHub is built for exactly this: a single API platform covering PAN, Aadhaar, bank-account, GST and business verification, plus RBI-compliant Video KYC and AML screening, with fuzzy name-matching and audit-ready logging throughout. It's designed around NBFC onboarding journeys rather than retrofitted onto them, and integrates with your LOS/LMS in days. If you're weighing alternatives, we publish side-by-side comparisons with the other major platforms.
The best provider is the one that clears your compliance bar, fits your document mix, and gives you a clean audit trail — verify that with a POC before you commit.
